As if a mass power-outage wasn't enough, the corridors of power in the US are reeling from a new threat – killer wasps.

The BBC website is reporting that nests of the wasps – which are about one and a half inches long – are appearing in doorways at the State Department.

Staff have been warned of the danger of stings should they tread on a female wasp, but have been reassured “this scenario is unlikely in our workplace environment”.

It also transpires that the wasps are only a threat to your life if you happen to be a cicada – hence their name, the cicada killer wasp.
